Ecology of the brown planthopper in temperate regions

چکیده
The population of the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) in temperate regions is characterized by discrete periods of seasonal appearance, low initial density, steep and steady growth, clumped spatial distribution, and violent fluctuations from year to year. N. lugens, a temporary inhabitant, arrives from long distances barely in the ricegrowing season. Its high potential fecundity, high adaptability to its host in various stages, and high tolerance to crowding cause its uneven, clumped spatial distribution within a field. These characteristics also cause the steep and steady growth in population that enables the insect to increase to destructive levels despite its low initial density. The fluctuations in density of initial migrant populations, which are governed by unstable factors, largely cause the violent year-to-year fluctuations in population. The relevance of these characteristics to the strategy for efficient control of the brown planthopper is discussed.

RNAi knockdown of acetyl-CoA carboxylase gene eliminates jinggangmycin-enhanced reproduction and population growth in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens
A major challenge in ecology lies in understanding the coexistence of intraguild species, well documented at the organismal level, but not at the molecular level. This study focused on the effects of the antibiotic, jinggangmycin (JGM), a fungicide widely used in Asian rice agroecosystems, on reproduction of insects within the planthopper guild, including the brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata...
متن کاملTake-Off Time of the First Generation of the Overwintering Small Brown Planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus in the Temperate Zone in East Asia
Overseas migration of the small brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus (Fallén), occurs during the winter wheat harvest season in East Asia. Knowing the take-off time of emigrating L. striatellus is crucial for predicting such migrations with a simulation technique because winds, carriers of migratory insects, change continuously. Several methods were used in China and Japan from late May to...
متن کاملMigration Prediction and Monitoring of Rice Planthoppers in Japan
This paper presents a new method of migration prediction for rice planthoppers. Using this new method, a three-dimensional backward trajectory analysis was conducted to find migration sources of rice planthoppers that immigrated into Japan. The results showed that the coastal regions of Fujian province in China and Taiwan were possible sources of the whitebacked planthopper (WBPH) that immigrat...
متن کاملFeeding-induced interactions between Nilaparvata lugens and Laodelphax striatellus (Hemiptera: Delphacidae): effects on feeding behavior and honeydew excretion.
Using electrical penetration graph, salivary flange, and honeydew measurement, this study investigated the effects of feeding-induced intra- and interspecific interactions on feeding behavior and honeydew excretion of brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) compared with small brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatellus). Results showed that many measures of feeding behavior were affected by feedi...
متن کاملDevelopment and use of EST-SSR markers for assessing genetic diversity in the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens Stål).
To assess genetic diversity in populations of the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens Stål) (Homoptera: Delphacidae), we have developed and applied microsatellite, or simple sequence repeat (SSR), markers from expressed sequence tags (ESTs). We found that the brown planthopper clusters of ESTs were rich in SSRs with unique frequencies and distributions of SSR motifs. Three hundred and fifty-o...
